Appointment of Frikki Walker as Artistic Director
Calton Consort, one of Scotland's foremost chamber choirs, is delighted to announce that they have appointed Frikki Walker to be their new Artistic Director. Frikki is taking up the baton in September 2018, and the choir will perform with him for the first time on Saturday 1st December, in Canongate Kirk.
Frikki Walker is an experienced and highly respected music director and organist based in Glasgow. He is currently Organist and Director of Music at St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, Glasgow, and conducts a number of other choirs for RSCM, RSNO, RCS and NYCOS.
Calton Consort was originally founded in 1991 by a group of friends who wanted to raise money for a church roof appeal. The choir is known for performing a varied and challenging repertoire to high acclaim. Of particular interest to the choir is performing lesser sung works, and pieces by contemporary composers. Calton Consort typically performs three concerts each year, in Canongate Kirk.
The Secretary of Calton Consort, Tessa Humby, commented "We are really looking forward to working with Frikki and exploring new repertoire with him. He brings a wealth of experience in working with choirs, and extensive knowledge of choral repertoire of all genres and eras."
Frikki Walker said "I am hugely excited at the prospect of working in Edinburgh with this enterprising group of singers whose thirst for unusual and new choral repertoire is never to be assuaged! Our journey together begins with a programme entitled 'Into the Light' which includes the Scottish premiere of a piece by Novello's young star composer, Owain Park."
